Performing Arts Career Advice?

Raven Purl: You cannot do your plan A and plan B at the same time. At least for dance, if you want to give it a shot you need to give it 110%. Dance majors often dance from 9 AM to 9 PM and that doesn't leave much time for anything else. Also Juilliard doesn't have any other majors but performing arts.Juilliard (that is how it is spelled. YA spell check is wrong) only takes 12 girls and 12 boys into their freshman dance class. It is contemporary focus so that means classes (and audition) in ballet and modern. Juilliard is also very expensive. There are girls from SAB who didn't make the ballet cut. Because there are so few spots and you have to be one of 12 of your gender to get in, you should think of this school as a reach school. Many great dancers with great careers end up getting passed over, so getting in can be a crap shoot. Marymount Manhattan may be a more realistic choice and less expensive. There is also the Ailey/Fordham program, SUNY Purchase and Eugene L! ang. I didn't mention NYU Tisch, because it is even more expensive than Juilliard and unlike Juilliard you need great grades to get in. It is also very selective. I see you are looking at NY schools so I kept my suggestions there.Make sure you visit each of the schools you are interested in and meet with the dance department head. Also attend a showing at the school so you can see if you are a good fit. It is a much better way to get a feel for a school than a college fair.* Have you given any thought to dance therapy as a career. Not dance physical therapy but dance as a therapy. It combines both dance and medicine Perhaps you might want to check this out. http://www.adta.org/@acebassiii- Manhattan School of Music is a great school but it doesn't offer dance....Show more

Foster Padgette: Hi,I lived in Manhattan most of my life, so I have a pretty good ideas of the scene. There's a huge difference between Marymount and Julliard. What about Manhattan School of Music?! That's on the same level as Julliard - Do they have a school! of dance? Find out what the entrance requirements for these schools are (SAT's,etc.) and make sure you have everything they require academically.Truthfully - sounds like the best thing you can do is get far away from your house. I'm very familiar with both addicts and bipolars.. Hope things work out.Your Pal,Acebass...Show more

Percy Seiger: That's a really good thought process ( can't figure out what to call it) I think though, you should go with dancing because once you choose what career your in, you're usually in it for life. Strive for what you love, rather than what's reasonable. I've figured that out lately... My life is almost opposite from yours and I am a freshman in high school. I have too been considering future careers and I play the viola. It's something I connect with and love. But, I have a 4.0 and my parents tell me I am too smart for it. But, it doesn't stop me.Defy the odds!Sorry, if you felt like this wasn't what you wanted, but this is what I ! think. Also, I've done plenty of research, and I would apply to a few major prestigious colleges (juilliard, incredibly tough to get into) and some universities, they may not be as well known, but it's still good. Look around and find one that is known for it's fine arts/performing arts program. Google works well too lol. Good luck and follow your heart!!P.S. Being a doctor is tough to get into and get a career in. Also, performing arts careers are also tough to get into, especially with low pay. But, if you get into the right stuff or the right chance. Your career flies!!!...Show more
